Post Sudan receives large container ships for first time to boost maritime confidence

June 28, 2026 (PORT SUDAN) – The southern container terminal at Port Sudan has received large-capacity container ships for the first time, a move expected to boost the confidence of international shipping lines in Sudanese port capabilities.

Port Sudan has faced several operational challenges in recent years that have limited its capacity to accommodate large vessels and adversely affected transhipment activities.

The Sea Ports Corporation said in a statement obtained by Sudan Tribune that the southern terminal welcomed a large vessel belonging to the Transmar-Atlantic line, carrying an import and export load of about 900 containers.

The terminal also received a ship from the Sharaf shipping line for the first time, with an import and export capacity exceeding 1,500 containers.

The state-owned corporation said these arrivals reflect the container terminal’s operational readiness and the efficiency of its handling rates.

On June 16, Port Sudan resumed transhipment operations for the first time in a long period, aiming to revitalize cargo storage and re-export operations to several regional ports.

Despite the recent progress, Port Sudan requires further expansion and deepening of its berths.

The current length of the berths is about 1,478 meters, with storage areas totalling approximately 1.48 million square meters.

Officials acknowledge that these capacities remain limited compared to those of global ports, which feature longer berths and larger operational spaces that allow for faster container handling and reduced ship waiting times.
