Sudan starts campaign against dengue fever
Nov 27, 2005 (KHARTOUM) — A formal campaign to combat deadly disease dengue fever kicked off in Sudan’s central state ofSouthern Kordofan on Sunday.
The campaign is funded by the United Kingdom International Development Department and the European Commission.
A UNICEF representative in Khartoum said in a press statement that large amounts of anti-dengue fever drugs will reach Kadugli, capital town of southern Kordofan state, adding vaccination is thesole means to prevent infection of the disease.
The drugs that reached Sudan on Saturday would meet the need tovaccinate more than 860,000 people in addition to 240,000 doses ofdrugs provided by the UNICEF and 800,000 others by French charity Medcins San Frontiers (MSF), explained the UNICEF representative.
The official pointed out that since the emergence of the denguefever in the state a month ago, the UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) supported by the Sudanese Ministry of Health have extended 1.2 tons of drugs to help fight the plague.
