UN seeks $1.6 bln for Sudan’s regional refugee crisis

February 17, 2026 (UNITED NATIONS) – The United Nations appealed on Wednesday for $1.6 billion to support millions of people displaced across seven neighbouring countries by Sudan’s war as it enters its third year, warning of an “unprecedented displacement crisis.”

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said humanitarian needs were outpacing resources in a conflict now marked by “almost daily drone attacks on civilians.”

The UNHCR and its partners are seeking funds to provide food, shelter, and healthcare to 5.9 million people by year’s end.

While host communities have shown solidarity, Dujarric said their capacity was being “pushed to the brink” by persistent underfunding.

The U.N. reiterated calls for warring parties to respect international law and stop targeting civilians and vital infrastructure, including hospitals and schools.
