Sudanese army says it downed drone crossing from Ethiopia

August 27, 2026 (ED DAMAZIN) – Sudan’s army said on Thursday it shot down a hostile drone that crossed into southeastern Blue Nile state from Ethiopian territory, the third such incident reported in the border area in recent days.

The military said in a statement that the aircraft was intercepted north of Sarkam on Thursday morning. It did not identify who operated the drone, its point of origin, or its intended target.

Ethiopian authorities were not immediately available for comment.

Sudan’s defence ministry previously reported that it had downed two similar drones in Blue Nile on Sunday and Monday. The military also said it intercepted three FH-95 drones in North Kordofan state earlier this month, following four downings in the same area in July.

Sudanese authorities have repeatedly accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of launching drone strikes against civilian infrastructure and military positions across several fronts. The RSF rarely comments on specific drone claims, maintaining that its forces act to protect civilians.

Fighting between the army and the RSF erupted in April 2023, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing around 13 million across Sudan and into neighbouring countries, according to United Nations estimates.
